Starting today, holiday travel is in full effect at Portland International Airport. The airport expects to welcome more than a half million travelers in the closing two weeks of the year.

From Monday, Dec. 20 through Friday, Dec. 31, PDX expects about 552,000 travelers. In that timeframe, the Monday before Christmas (Dec. 20) and the Monday following the holiday (Dec. 27) look to be the peak travel days with about 49,000 travelers forecasted each day.

The airport expects to end the 2021 calendar year having welcomed about 11.9 million travelers.

Catching a flight? Do these 3 things!

Mask up. The federal mask mandate was extended to March 18, 2022; face coverings are still required inside at airports nationwide and onboard all airlines serving PDX.

Arrive at least two hours in advance. It’s critical for travelers to give themselves enough time to navigate the travel process without stress or concern for missing their flights.

Double check your boarding pass. There is no longer a hallway connecting all gates past security. Confirm your departure gate so you only go through security screening once.

New Year, Next Vacation

If you’re not traveling this year, consider celebrating the season by planning next year’s vacation. British Airways recently announced nonstop service from PDX to London’s Heathrow Airport, beginning June 3, 2022.

The airline will serve PDX year-round with the airport’s first scheduled service aboard a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a quieter, more fuel-efficient aircraft that offers passengers a cabin experience including vaulted ceilings, adjustable LED lighting, larger windows, an air purification system designed to reduce jet lag and fatigue, and large enough overhead bins to accommodate four full-sized wheeled cabin suitcases.
