Fall Travel Volumes Expected to Slow; Changes Ahead for PDX

Mirroring the travel trends across the country, summer at Portland International Airport saw the highest number of travelers since pre-pandemic times. However, as the nation continues to wrestle with the pandemic, PDX expects fall travel to slow, while construction activities continue full speed ahead.

So Long Summer: This past summer, the airport expected to see about 4.2 million travelers. Summer travel at PDX fell just below the forecast. While still awaiting final tallies, the airport expects to close out summer with about 4 million travelers.

Summer is typically the busiest time at PDX, followed by less travel when school begins in the fall and then a predictable uptick during the winter holidays. Fall forecasts continue to suggest PDX will still be about 30 to 35 percent down from pre-pandemic figures.

PDX Next Moves Forward: As work continues to build a new, more spacious main terminal travelers are advised to keep their heads up and follow the changing directional signs.

New bypass hallways add 3 to 5 minutes of walk time to safely move people around construction sites and keep travelers connected to their favorite shops and restaurants. The north bypass connecting the D/E concourses opened earlier this week; the south bypass connecting the B/C concourses opens in mid-October.

When the concourse connector closed nine months ago, construction teams undertook the ultimate recycling challenge: cutting the building in half, moving it around the outside and reattaching it to the building to create bypasses around the main terminal construction. These new bypasses offer the best airfield views, the return of the comfy chairs (hooray!) and more local and regional artwork.

Health and Safety Paramount: The health and safety of travelers and employees continues to be the top priority at PDX while keeping the airport a welcoming place for all.

While regulations differ from state-to-state, federal law requires face coverings be worn in PDX and onboard all flights. Travelers can review tips about what to expect and what they can do to make their journey easier at www.flypdx.com/travelsafe.
