Wheelchair Assistance
Each airline provides their own wheelchair assistance, and wheelchair reservations are recommended before arriving at PDX. Make sure to contact your airline to make a reservation. On your day of travel, check in at your airline’s ticket counter or call 503-460-4300 to get connected with your wheelchair provider. If you need assistance getting into the terminal, please see the following. It may take up to 30 minutes for your wheelchair to arrive.
Wheelchair service is provided at no charge, but gratuities are greatly appreciated.
Wheelchair Service to/from locations throughout PDX
Parking Garages
- If you need full wheelchair service, we recommend parking in either the short- or long-term garages. (Visit our parking page for accessible parking discount information.)

- Call buttons for assistance can be found at the elevator cores and operators are available from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Upper/Lower Roadways
- If you can walk short distances, accessible loading and unloading zones are located at the north and south ends of the upper and lower roadways in front of the terminal.
- Only active loading or unloading in these areas is allowed, and a driver is required to remain with the vehicle at all times. Unattended vehicles may be cited and/or towed.
- Priority seating is located inside the terminal at the north and south ends of departures (upper roadway).
- Once seated, you can call wheelchair assistance at 503-460-4300 and let them know your location.

Traveling with your Mobility Device
If you are traveling with your mobility device, here are a few suggestions to improve your airport experience.
When making your airline reservations, advise your airline of the following information:
- Type of mobility device
- Please note that Segway mobility devices are not authorized to be stored on most carriers.
- Weight and size of mobility device
- Whether your mobility device will require assembly/disassembly
- Whether you require assistance to go up or down stairs and/or reach your seat
- Whether you will be checking your mobility device at the ticket counter or at the departure gate
When checking in for your flight on the day of travel, make sure to confirm all of the above information with an airline agent.
Allow extra time when traveling with a battery-powered/electric wheelchair, cart, or scooter.
- Although not required, we recommend checking in at your airline ticket counter at least two hours in advance and arriving at your departure gate at least one hour before your scheduled departure.
Attach instructions to your wheelchair if assembly/disassembly is needed
- Although not required, it’s helpful to airline staff if you attach a copy of assembly/disassembly instructions to your mobility device, and if needed, bring specialized tools with you when traveling. (If you have questions about permitted carry-on tools, please contact the Transportation Security Administration at 1-866-289-9673 .)
If your mobility device is battery-powered, identify the battery type and know how to access it
- Please let airline staff know your mobility device’s specific battery type and whether it is spillable or non-spillable (to make sure the airline follows federal “dangerous goods” handling procedures).
- Make sure you or someone you’re traveling with knows how to access the battery compartment. Bring specialized tools, if needed.
- Some mobility devices have batteries that can only be accessed by a technician. If this is the case, you may not be able to fly with your mobility device. Check with your airline to be sure.
Ask about folding wheelchairs
If space is available, many airlines will allow folding wheelchairs to be stowed in the cabin on a first-ask, first-serve basis. If there’s no cabin storage available, airlines will typically allow you to check your wheelchair as baggage at either the ticket counter or the departure gate. Your airline will provide a wheelchair and wheelchair aid to assist you to your gate, if needed.
Notify your airline if you’d like to use your mobility device in your connecting city
Advise your airline in advance if you wish to use your mobility device in your connecting city. They’ll let you know if you’ll have sufficient time in your connecting city to access and use your own device. If there won’t be sufficient time, the airline can provide you with their wheelchair service.
Check your plane’s aisle width
The width of aisle space varies from aircraft to aircraft. Some aisles can be fairly narrow and difficult to navigate with an airline’s onboard wheelchair. Ask your airline about the aisle width before confirming reservations if you’re concerned about the wheelchair transfer process from the gate onto the aircraft.
Every airline has its own mobility device policy. Visit your airline’s website or call their reservation desk to learn more about their procedures and requirements for mobility devices. Visit our airline directory.
