PDX People are known for their exceptional customer service, and it's often the small gestures that make all the difference. From offering friendly conversation to keeping an eye out for safety, PDX People always go above and beyond to make every experience a positive one. They understand that it's not just about getting from point A to point B, but also about feeling comfortable and cared for along the way, whether you're a traveler or a fellow employee.
To recognize actions that truly stand out as extraordinary and support our core values, we host the PDX People customer service awards each quarter. Below are the airport employees we recognized from January through March 2024.
Yasmina Botteron
Portland Coffee Roasters
Nominated by Alaina Sargent, Portland Coffee Roasters Cafe D/E manager
"Yasmina was the only cafe staff member able to make it to work during the January snowstorm. She worked by herself, providing customers with much needed cups of coffee during the storm. Yasmina crushed it by herself!"
Nominated by a PDX employee
"During the weather event, Yasmina showed up to work and was the only coffee option available for travelers and employees. Through all the chaos, she kept a smile on her face, had a great attitude and worked hard to get through the line. Great job, Yasmina!"
David Budnick
TSA
Nominated by Tiffany, PDX employee
"David can frequently be found interacting with passengers at the security checkpoint. When he speaks with passengers, he is friendly and attentive.
David shines when he observes passengers in need, particularly families that may need additional help such as those with hidden disabilities. David will approach them in a kind and compassionate manner and offer aid to make screening less stressful. He always takes the time to educate them about the programs offered by the Port of Portland or TSA that are available to help them in the future. He offers a sensory bag if appropriate and directs them to the sensory room or other amenities they may find useful. David's frequent interactions with passengers really make him stand out as an example of who we are at PDX."
Tim Cain
Bags Inc.
Nominated by a Port of Portland employee
"Tim was bringing a passenger in a wheelchair to Concourse B. While passing by the beautiful paintings along the wall, Tim slowed down so the guest could see and appreciate the art. While their conversation was not heard, it was clear Tim and the guest were talking about the art. Tim took the time to be friendly while doing his work. Kindness does not cost a thing, but is worth so much!"
Jeffery Galloway
Port of Portland Police Department
Nominated by a PDX traveler
"I was driving a friend to PDX when we stopped short on Airport Way as a dog ran across the busy road. I parked, and my friend and I went to help catch the runaway dog. Along with a person who was already in pursuit, we got the dog to the TriMet fence line, but it continued to evade us. At this point, Sergeant Galloway stopped and offered assistance.
He handed dog treats to all the volunteers trying to catch the loose pup. He had a leash available, personally tried to catch the dog, and used his vehicle to alter oncoming traffic for everyone's safety. Sergeant Galloway, along with PDX Wildlife Service personnel, worked for a long time in the cold rainy night to gain the dog's trust and try to get the stray to safety.
At this point, I had to head home, but they were still in pursuit when I left. Their efforts are greatly appreciated by all!”
Andy Hickman
Southwest Airlines
Nominated by Erika, Southwest Airlines
“Andy spent a lot of time with a Southwest customer who was delayed due to the weather here in Portland. He spoke at length with her while she waited for her friends to pick her up. The traveler was 89 years old and Andy's efforts helped her be more comfortable and feel taken care of in a tough situation.”
Michelle Jokela
Dollar Car Rental
Nominated by a PDX traveler
"From the moment I walked up to the counter, the service provided by Michelle was excellent! She was fast and efficient while engaging me in a conversation about my plans for my visit to Portland and showing a genuine interest. We conversed about where my trip would take me and shared experiences about places we had in common. In that short time, the paperwork was done, the keys and directions to the car were handed to me, and I was on my way. I really appreciate the personal touch she provided to make the transaction so pleasant."
Terry Stone
SP+ Corporation
Nominated by a PDX employee
A PDX employee called to compliment the employee shuttle driver for exceptional service. She said the driver was polite, respectful and "just a good man." She couldn't say enough about his professionalism and courtesy.
Nominated by Karen Tse, Alaska Airlines customer service agent
"Terry drove me and two other employees to the parking lot. Before he turned onto Alderwood, he found a knocked down road sign and a car bumper in the middle of the lane. He called the bus dispatch and reported it, then he stepped out of his driver's seat and moved the two items onto the middle median. He kept us and other drivers safe and was professional and caring."
Kasey Coleman
Tender Loving Empire
Nominated by a PDX employee
"Kasey has always been a pillar of the PDX community. They arrive to work with an incredible, warm attitude and go above and beyond for TLE.
During the recent weather event, Kasey was the only member of the TLE team that made it in EVERY DAY to help customers and PDX People shop our locations. It is during these adverse times for small businesses that Kasey going above and beyond truly helped our community in so many ways. We are so proud to have them work for us."
Doreen Champaco
Carrie Countryman
Sam Fetters
Port of Portland Lost & Found
Nominated by Eliza, PDX traveler
"I can't believe what an excellent team you have! The foundation of my professional experience was customer service, and it is a dying art of kindness. Sam went above and beyond my expectations. He was available to circle back with me regarding my issue. Doreen provided incredible support as well. Lastly, Carrie emailed me with personal discretionary care and was willing to mail me my placard with my permission. I have called a few times to express my sincere gratitude. I am shouting from the rooftops on the East Coast: Thank you!"
